9 - 15 December, 2006
The Second Sunday in Advent
(Last week's Bulletin is here...)
This Sunday, December 10, is the annual Blue Christmas Service. Sponsored by the local clergy association, it is held each year in the United Methodist Church on Boston Neck Road. I have come to look forward to participating in this quiet and calming time of prayer. I have an ever-growing list of people who were truly God's gifts to me and who are no longer here on earth. I like to have the opportunity to sit and remember them and like Mary as described in Luke's gospel "treasure them in my heart."
This doesn't make me melancholy or blue. On the contrary it makes me feel profoundly content and deeply grateful for the many people who have enriched my life so fully. I recall New England poet May Sarton's "All Souls":
Did someone say that there would be an end,
an end, Oh, an end to love and mourning?
What has been once so interwoven cannot be raveled,
not the gift ungiven.
Now the dead move through all of us still glowing.
Mother and child, lover and lover mated,
are wound and bound together and enflowing.
What has been plaited cannot be unplaited--
only the strands grow richer with each loss
and memory makes kings and queens of us.
Dark into light, light into darkness, spin.
When all the birds have flow to some real haven,
we who find shelter in the warmth within,
listen and feel new-cherished, new-forgiven,
as the lost human voices speak through us and blend our complex love,
our mourning without end.

The pain of abortion - from one who knows...
"When I found out I was pregnant, I was so scared and felt like I didn't know where to turn. I felt like I had no other choice. After I had my abortion I felt relief at first. But after 7 years of denial it finally hit me. I was so scared when I found out what an abortion really [is]. I was so angry at my family and boyfriend (now husband). I felt like nobody was there for me. I was angry at the clinic personnel for saying everything would be fine. I found Project Rachel and they helped me start to grieve [for] my child. So many women feel that if they had more support and truth during their crisis pregnancy many lives would have been saved." Help is available: Call 1-800-395-HELP.
Those who would like to bring the bread and wine to the altar, please call the Parish Center at 295-0387 to arrange.
