The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

(Last week's Bulletin is here...)

From Father Dennis:

Father Dennis On Monday evening driving back from a visit with friends in Framingham, I listened to WGBH's Eric in the Night. I have mentioned before that on Martin Luther King Day this jazz program is always a tribute to Dr. King's memory and legacy. Eric played a recording of King's "March on Washington" speech. It is more familiar to us as the "I Have a Dream" speech. Forty-four years after its original delivery the speech remains a powerful challenge to us as Americans.

King's majestic voice and passionate conviction increase tremendously the impact of his words. He spoke as a Christian pastor and addressed himself to all of us who are Christians. He changed the Catholic Church in our nation in important ways. He, like Pope John XXIII who died just a short while before the March on Washington, broke through the walls that kept Christians of one church or another apart. Church leaders were moved to come out of their churches and join hands in working to create a society that Christ would be proud of.

The holiday in honor of Dr. King always occurs shortly before the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on January 18. This annual observance doesn't get the attention it merits. The divisions among churches who claim to be communities of disciples committed to the gospel of Jesus seriously weaken the impact of our witness to the faith in a world that is increasingly unconcerned about that gospel. We are fortunate as Americans to live in a society that has been since its inception religiously pluralistic. If this presents problems in communicating convincingly a particular denominational spin on dogma and discipline, it more than compensates for it by allowing us the chance to live and work together and practice the essential commandment of Christ that we love one another following his example. It is a great time to thank God for the gift of great pastors like Dr. King and the gift of so many wonderful sisters and brothers whose lives keep alive the hallmark of the followers of Jesus: "See how these Christians love one another."

BAPTIZED BUT NOT CONFIRMED?

Is this you? Or somebody you know? For any number of reasons baptized Catholics do not always complete their initiation into the Church. This is done through the Sacrament of Confirmation and receiving Holy Communion. This is a simple process of preparation that results in the satisfaction of participating fully in the sacramental life that Christ has given us for our joy and support. For more information call Father Reardon.
