The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

(Last week's Bulletin is here...)

From Father Dennis:

Father Dennis On the first of February Gian Carlo Menotti died. He was 95. Most people know him as the composer and lyricist for the Christmas opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors." It is believed to have been the first opera ever commissioned for television and was an annual favorite from its first presentation in 1951 until well into the sixties. I grew up with it and still consider listening to it during the holidays as an essential part of my reflection on the Christmas mystery. One music critic describes it as "full of humor, wonder, and drama" and the melodies as "tuneful and charming." This seems right on the mark to me.

This beautiful work tells of a poor, crippled, shepherd boy who is visited by the Magi on their way to Bethlehem. Amahl's mother tries to steal some of the kings' gold to use to help her child; she is caught. The kings offer to let her keep the gold and in a beautiful aria one of them explains that the king they seek will not need it. In one of the most moving arias in the entire production, the king sings: "The child we seek doesn't need our gold/ On love, on love alone he will build his kingdom./ His pierced hand will hold no scepter./ His haloed head will wear no crown./ His might will not be built on your toil./ Swift as lightning he will soon walk among us./ He will bring us new light and receive our cares/ And the keys to his city belong to the poor." She returns the gold saying that for such a king she has waited all her life. Amahl offers his crutch as an additional gift. When he does this, he then finds that he can walk. He leaves with the kings to pay homage to the child who has healed him.

The lyrics help to bridge Christmas and Lent which we begin in less than two weeks. The romanticism of Christmas must give way to the reality of the adult Christ who is our Crucified Savior. It is a good time to look ahead to Lent. Participating in the sessions of Generations of Faith is a great way to do this. There are two sessions this Sunday (the 11th) and another on Tuesday evening (the 13th). G of F is for every individual of whatever age.... You are invited and you are very welcome!

BAPTIZED BUT NOT CONFIRMED?

Is this you? Or somebody you know? For any number of reasons baptized Catholics do not always complete their initiation into the Church. This is done through the Sacrament of Confirmation and receiving Holy Communion. This is a simple process of preparation that results in the satisfaction of participating fully in the sacramental life that Christ has given us for our joy and support. For more information call Father Reardon.

Stewardship:

The words of the Psalmist echo the theme of all of today's readings. "Happy are they who hope in the Lord." As good stewards, firmly grounded in that hope, may we bear fruit in due season -- assisting the poor, feeding the hungry and consoling the sorrowful whenever we have the chance.
