St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church Strategic Planning

Futures Committee

During the summer of 2000, the Futures Committee was established to create a strategic plan for St. Bernard's parish to guide us during the next five years. After much discussion on how best to proceed, the decision was made to retain the services of Dr. Elaine Notarantonio of Bryant College who has created such plans for other parishes. Under Elaine's guidance, we have been following a two-phase process to develop this strategic plan.

Phase 1: Needs Assessment

The purpose of the Needs Assessment Phase was to gather concerns, ideas and suggestions from the entire parish. In January 2001, in-depth interviews were conducted with key members of the parish to determine issues of concern. During February and March, focus groups were convened to discuss these and other issues. Based on the issues identified, a Parish Survey was created and issued on Easter Sunday, 2001 to gain the opinions of the entire parish. Responses were collected and presented to the parish in a Community Forum on June 25, 2001 to conclude Phase 1.

Phase 2: Strategic Planning

Phase 2 began in July, 2001 with the goal of identifying the programs and facilities that will form the future foundation for the spiritual and social needs of all our parishioners and our community. On August 11, the Futures Committee, led by our consultant, Dr. Elaine Notarantonio, hosted a workshop for the newly formed Core Team to begin the next phase of our strategic planning process. The workshop focused on the six areas of concern identified by our recent parish survey.

We have divided into small groups to conduct brainstorming sessions to create ideas for improvements in each of these areas, and the results are promising. We are currently collecting all these ideas, and plan to solicit more from the parish. Each member of the Core Team will attempt to get one or two more people involved with the small group addressing one of the areas, with the goal of identifying even more ideas. Please consider joining this endeavor if you get contacted by any of the members of the Core Team.

As we get more people involved over the next month, the small groups will be generating more ideas and analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in each of the six areas. In September, the entire Core Team will meet to perform our next step, which is to assess the ideas collected in each area.

By reaching out to all parishioners and soliciting feedback on these ideas, we hope to develop a plan that is responsive to the needs of all. Our final results will be presented in another Community Forum tentatively planned for February, 2002.
